Your easy pace shouldn’t feel like a race.

  • Legs heavy from the first mile
  • Easy runs that feel like tempo runs
  • Tired after a full night’s sleep
  • Upped your iron. No change.

If that sounds like you, your ferritin is worth checking. It’s the blood test that shows your stored iron. And the line for “low” just moved.

A woman in her 40s running alone on a park road in morning light.

A “normal” ferritin can still be low.

LabCorp and Quest reports have flagged a woman’s ferritin as low only under 15 or 16. That’s changing. LabCorp moved its low line for women to 30 in its October 5, 2026 update. The American Society of Hematology’s 2026 guideline uses 30 too, and 50 with heavy periods. It advises against using 15.

The low-iron line is moving up, from 15 to 30

The hemoglobin line comes from a U.S. survey of 7,498 women (25.2, rounded).

So a 17, like the marathoner’s above, can still print as “normal” on some reports, while the new guideline calls it iron deficiency. Swiss sports-medicine guidance for athletes puts it plainly: under 15 is “empty,” and 15 to 30 is “low.”

Ask for ferritin by name. It’s a separate test from a standard blood count, and in most states you can order it online without a doctor’s visit. Labcorp OnDemand listed it at $59 on October 8, 2026. We aren’t connected to LabCorp.

Already have a number under 30, like a 17? You’ve done this step. If your number says you don’t need iron, don’t start: the same Swiss guidance warns that taking iron for a long time when your ferritin isn’t low makes no sense and may be harmful. Your 60 days cover that too.

Upped your dose and nothing moved?

You didn’t fail iron. The dose did.

When a number won’t move, the usual advice is to take more. But more iron often means more stomach trouble, and it isn’t a sure fix. One Reddit commenter put it like this:

“i’ve bought iron like 4 different times and quit all of them. pills wreck me. feels like i got kicked in the stomach and then i’m constipated for days.”

Our strip has 19 mg. In a blood donor trial called STRIDE, 19 mg a day for 60 days after each donation rebuilt about the same body iron as 38 mg, with side effects no more common than on placebo pills.

Took every pill, every day, for months, and your number still didn’t move? Ask your doctor to look for why. Skipped days, cut back or quit because of your stomach? That’s who this strip is for.

The two trials, and their fine print

Two very different trials put “more” to the test. In the first, 90 hospital patients over 80 with anemia took 15, 50 or 150 mg a day for 60 days. On the smallest and the biggest dose, hemoglobin rose about the same, 1.3 and 1.4 points, and stomach discomfort went from 20% to 70%. In the second, called STRIDE, blood donors took 19 mg or 38 mg a day for 60 days after each donation. Both doses rebuilt about the same amount of body iron, and side effects were no more common than on placebo pills.

Facebook comment: I did not take any other supplements besides the melts. I have taken iron pills before and my ferritin went down in addition to all the other common iron side effects. With the melts, I had no noticeable side effects. I tested late June and my ferritin was at 25. Started the melts a week or two later (no other iron supplements in between) and at the 30 day mark tested again and my ferritin was 45. More studies of runners, and their fine print

NIH sets the daily need at 18 mg for women 19 to 50, against 8 mg for men. Eat mostly plants? NIH says vegetarians need 1.8 times as much iron. Sweat isn’t a big one: in 9 women who cycled for two hours, sweat cost about 1% of their daily need.

On one college cross-country team, 57% of the women ran low on iron at least once over two seasons, with ferritin under 20 or another sign of low iron. And that was while a dietitian handed every runner iron supplements.

Every answer.

Is 19 mg enough?

It’s the same daily amount as the lower dose in STRIDE, the blood donor trial above, where 19 and 38 mg a day rebuilt about the same body iron over 60 days after each donation, with side effects no more common than on placebo pills. Across 20 trials, ferrous sulfate, the usual iron in pills, had 2.32 times the odds of gut side effects against placebo. The STRIDE researchers put it this way: Iron deficiency anemia is a common clinical condition often treated with tablets containing 65 mg of elemental iron. Such doses can elicit gastrointestinal side effects lowering patient compliance. Buyers on this page posted 26 to 73 in 4 weeks and 19 to 47 in 60 days. Your 60 days and a retest show you yours.

Will it fit in my run belt?

Yes. Each strip comes in its own sealed sachet, about 5.5 cm (2 inches) square. One fits in a belt pocket, a vest or a key pouch.

When should I take it? Can I take it with coffee?

You can take it any time of day. Leave a gap from coffee, tea, calcium and some medications when you can. Ask your pharmacist about timing with prescriptions.

How long until my ferritin moves?

Three buyers on this page retested at about a month and posted 26 to 73, 28 to 75 and 25 to 45. Retest around week six, inside your 60 days. After that, retest on the schedule your doctor sets.

How many strips a day?

One. The label says not to take more than one a day. If you take other iron, count it too: NIH sets the upper limit for adults at 45 mg a day.

Is there folic acid in it? I have an MTHFR variant.

Yes. Each strip has 240 mcg of folic acid, which the label counts as 400 mcg DFE of folate. It isn’t methylfolate. The CDC says people with MTHFR variants can process all types of folate, including folic acid.

What does it taste like?

Raspberry, sweetened with monk fruit and stevia. It melts on your tongue, so there’s nothing to wash down. If any iron flavor is too much for you, the 60-day guarantee covers it.

Is it vegetarian? Gluten-free?

Yes. It’s vegetarian, gluten-free and lactose-free, with no gelatin.
